Personal Income Tax (PIT) — Step by Step
Follow these five steps to file your Personal Income Tax (PIT) return from start to finish.
Step 1 — Read the Filing Guide
Open the PIT Filing tool and land on the "Filing Guide" tab. Here you will find a plain-language overview of who must file, the 31 March annual deadline, eligible income types, tax bands, and the reliefs you can claim under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 (NTA 2025). Read through this before entering any figures so you know what information to gather.
Tips
- •Have your payslips, rental receipts, and investment statements ready before you start.
- •Note which reliefs apply to you (pension, NHF, NHIS, life insurance, mortgage interest, dependants).
Step 2 — Check Your Filing Obligation
Move to the "Obligation Checker" tab. Answer a few quick questions about your employment status, income sources, and residency. The checker confirms whether you are legally required to file an annual PIT return and which income types apply to you. Once confirmed, click "Proceed to Calculator".
Tips
- •Self-employed individuals and professionals must always file, regardless of income level.
- •If you have multiple employers or side income, select "Both" as your employment type.
Step 3 — Calculate Your Tax
On the "Tax Calculator" tab, enter your income details — basic salary, allowances, bonuses, self-employment income, rental income, and any other earnings. Then enter your eligible reliefs and deductions. The calculator computes your gross income, total reliefs, taxable income, PAYE already deducted, and your final tax payable or refund due — all in real time.
Tips
- •Enter gross annual figures, not monthly amounts.
- •If PAYE has already been deducted by your employer, enter it in the "PAYE Already Deducted" field to see your balance or refund.
Step 4 — Estimate Penalties (if applicable)
If you are filing after the 31 March deadline, use the "Penalty Calculator" tab. Enter your tax due and the number of months late to see the penalty owed — ₦100,000 for the first month and ₦50,000 for each subsequent month under NTA 2025. This helps you understand the cost of late filing before you submit.
Tips
- •Penalties accrue monthly — file as early as possible to minimise charges.
- •Even if you cannot pay immediately, filing on time reduces penalties.
Step 5 — Generate Your Filing Report
Go to the "Generate Report" tab and complete the 5-step filing wizard: (1) Taxpayer details — name, TIN, contact, state of residence; (2) Income declaration — enter all income sources; (3) Reliefs & deductions — claim eligible reliefs; (4) Review — verify your computed tax; (5) Declaration — confirm and submit. You can then preview the full report on screen and download it as a PDF for your records or submission.
Tips
- •Your TIN is required — you can find it on your payslip or from your state tax authority.
- •Review every figure on Step 4 before confirming the declaration.
- •The downloaded PDF is formatted to match the official self-assessment structure.
